In the Physicians Desk Reference, a solid portion of the exposition of Marinol includes warnings roughly the obstinate effects.Seriously, doesn t commonality sense set up that it is not veracious medical hold to allow a centre of attention to be utilize as a medicine if that product is ingested by smoking, not FDA-approved, do up of hundreds of variant chemicals, and self-prescribed and administered by the patient. The federal government, over the dying 20 categorys involving a progeny of administrations from both governgenial parties, has determined that smoking marijuana has no redeeming medicative value, an d is in fact calumniatory to health. These governmental agencies include the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Food and Drug Administration, and the U. S. Public health Service.Their latest finding, as recently as 1994, was affirmed in a end by the U. S. tribunal of Appeals in Washington, DC Since the pro-marijuana lobby has been unrealized in relations with the federal government, they have targeted state and local governments to legitimize smoking marijuana as a medicine. A careful examination of their legislative and/or ballot proposals reveals they are written to efficaciously neutralize the enforcement of close to marijuana laws. Crude, intoxicant marijuana at a lower place their proposals would be easier to stupefy and use than as yet the most harmless, low-altitude prescription drug.major(ip) medical and health organizations, as well as the spacious majority of nationwide recognized expert medical doctors, scientists and researchers, have not authentic smo king marijuana as a safe and effective medicine. These organizations include the American Medical Association, the American pubic louse Society, subject field Sclerosis Association, the American Glaucoma Association, American academy of Ophthalmology, National bosom contri besidese, National Cancer initiate, National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke, National Institute of dental consonant Research, and the National Institute on allergy and Infectious Diseases.thither are thousands of studies obtainable documenting the harmful visible and psychological effects of smoking marijuana. The harmful consequences include but are not limited to premature cancer, addiction, coordination and perception detriment, a shape of mental disorders including depression, hostility and qualifying magnitude aggressiveness, general apathy, retentiveness loss, reproductive disabilities, impairment to the immune system, numerous airway injuries, and other general problems asso ciated with intoxication. So far I have shown wherefore marijuana should be disregarded as medicinal now I destine to discount some more common fallacies that marijuana advocates a comparable(p) to throw close to as well as the argument that marijuana causes no harm to the smoker. First, advocates for marijuana like to phrase laws against alcoholic drink and drugs take up t hunt so why have them. They often use restraint in the early 1900 s as an example. Even though breastwork was unpopular and exclusively in effect for about fourteen old age, it did encounter the use of alcohol. intoxicant use, alcohol-related deaths, and admissions to hospitals for other alcohol related illnesses were all reduced approximately 50 shareage. Also, foreign to what you hear, theres no point of a big increase in crime. That probably get ats for good gangster movies, but little else. prohibition was rescinded because alcohol historically had been part of our lives, and the majority d idn t validate prohibition. Drugs, on the other hand, have not been part of our ordinary lives, and over 80 percent of Americans esteem drug prohibitionA second error is that legalizing marijuana would reduce the number of crimes and would free up prison office for more barbarian offenders. First of all there are 12 meg arrests made per annum out of which 1 million are for drug violations, of these only 12 percent are sentenced to prison. around of the shepherds crooks that are locked up already have rap sheets a mile pertinacious for different crimes anyways. flat if we legalize marijuana the arrests would stop because of the transform in the roughshod code but the criminals wouldn t change their behavior and deform law-abiding citizens. They will continue to pay crimes to pay rent, bribe cars, go to concerts, spoil clothes, eat, and buy legal drugs. Thirdly, most advocates like to use the Netherlands as an example of marijuana being legalized and not having any pr oblems. The Netherlands has begun experiencing a variety of problems including a rise in crime, welfare, unemployment, and addicts from other countries migrating there to indulge their drug appetites. A after part common fallacy is that if we legalize marijuana we would save at least 20 one thousand thousand dollars per annum that is now used towards law enforcement. What this fallacy assumes is that there would be no governmental termss associated with distribution, regulation, and image of legal drugs. apply alcohol as a model, we know these costs can be stiff. knowledgeable government, there is very little they do that is cost effective. In 1965, when we started Medicare, Congress project that it would cost this awkward $12 billion by 1990. The actual costs that year were $110 billion. In 1968 food stamps cost $173 million annually, and now, less than 30 years later, the price tag is $24 billion. And, finally the greatest fallacy that marijuana does not harm the user.T he fact the Great Compromiser that marijuana and hashish are intoxicating substances that make the user high. The tier of mental and strong-arm impairment depends on the amount and strength of marijuana smoked. in that respect is a substantial difference betwixt the 2 to 5 percent THC weed of the 70s and the 10 to 20 percent THC in todays weed. There is a definite reason why the higher(prenominal) grade is more desirable and expensive, and thats simply because it gives the user a more powerful high. Studies show marijuana can and often does cause apathy, diminishes mental capacity, causes bother in concentrating, compensate in performance, and bemused motivation.Thousands of studies also show marijuana use adversely affects the brain, genteelness process, immune system, respiratory system, cardiovascular system, and remains in the body for extended periods of time. In addition, marijuana use often impairs sane thought processes, distorts reality, reduces self-control, and releases inhibitions, all of which increase the pass off of harmful and criminal behavior. Many times the user is unconscious he or she is being bear upon unless told by others. A Stanford Medical educate study showed pilots to be impaired 24 hours after smoking one joint, flat though they matte up they were functioning normally. In conclusion, the bottom groove is, whenever persons are at a lower place the influence, they pose a threat to themselves and others. We dont convey more excite people on our streets, at state-supported events, or thrust on our highways. commerce fatality studies clearly demonstrate a disproportionate number of deaths caused by drivers nether the influence of marijuana. wherefore would we want to make a substance like that legal, chintzy and readily available to satisfy he desires of a few who already subscribe to to violate our laws? oasist the advocates knowledgeable anything from our experience with tipsiness?

The Breakfast Club Film Analysis Essay Example for Free
The Breakfast Club Film Analysis EssayIn the beginning of the movie I phone the only person who falls on a lower floor the open self category is Brian. He is upfront with the others ab discover(predicate) his grades, his academics, and his family. As the day goes on and he starts to bond more with the others he starts to talk about his thoughts and emotions as well. I didnt think there was any(prenominal) one with a blind self. I felt that John was under the hidden self because he was just know for breaking rules, and doing what adults told him not to do. They as well thought he was selfish and did not take into account any one elses feelings or care about what he would say to the others. He then proves himself as not selfish when he distracts the princable so the others bottomland get back to the library without being noticed. I also felt Allison would be under hidden self because she is very quiet and to her self, not show anything about her life to the others in the b eginning, but then she starts to get more comfortable with them and starts to open up and be truthful with them about why she is there and how she feels about her family. Andrew and Claire to me both fell under the unknown self. Andrew just wants to please his father. He lives his life through what his father is expecting of him especially with his wrestling. He doesnt do his think on his own, but through what he thinks his father would want. Claire is the privileged girl, who is unsure of herself in her own crowd of popular friends. I dont think she wants to be popular and live up the other kids standards and have the same type of reputation. An example of the self-fulfilling formation is when John makes his comments about the rest of the students home life, and what it is alike for them and their families at home. Claire judging John and saying that he is a pig when he is pressing her with stir questions would be a personality formation. And I think all the kids making their first impressions on the others are the primacy. Consistency would be Andrew being an athlete. I think for the fundamental attribution error I will talk about all five of the students in the movie. The students judge John on being the questioning boy, menace, and bully. He does act like all of these things at the beginning of the movie, but with bringing out the other kids insecurities, and making them all feel uncomfortable with the things he says, he faces his own home life reality of being abused by his father. The abuse he is receiving at home is making him act out in school, and put up the act of being defiant, and bad. All of the students have a preconceived notion about Andrew because he is a star athlete, he has a perfect life. The reason he is in detention is because he injured another student. He did this to try and impress his father he also says he joined the wrestling team because his father wanted him to. So essentially he is just looking for acceptance from his father and is willing to go as far as hurting another student to get that acceptance.Brian is known as the nerd, or the brain. He is in almost all of the academic clubs and does great with his grades in school. He says his parents push him very hard to maintain his grades and tell the others that he would quite a kill himself then get a helplessness grade. Which his why he is in detention. Allison is the quiet one. She starts off by not saying much of anything. Then she opens up with the group saying her family ignores her at home, and would rather be at detention because she has nothing better to do.Claire is the rich and privileged girl, who everyone thinks gets anything she wants. She opens up and says that her parents play her against each other in their relationship, and how she really doesnt like the fact that she is under so much pressure from others because she is in the popular group. To everyones surprised she also reveals that she is a virgin. I think when John is lecture to Clai re about her being popular and assuming she has sex she has a mental distraction and gets so mad she cannot think straight.John is also bias towards Brian when talking to him about when academic clubs he is in. Andrew starts to put John on the spot when talking about his home life and I think John has a lack of appropriate focus when he tells Andrew that he doesnt want to talk about it anymore and walks away frustrated and mad to sit on the staircase. In my opinion all five of these kids have premature judgment. They think Andrew is just a jock, Claire is the popular girl, Brian is the nerd, Allison is the quiet and weird one, and John is the menace, and is obnoxious.

Ethical Issues in Testing and Assessment Essay Example for Free
Ethical Issues in Testing and Assessment EssayCounselling psychology plays an essential role in the life of most one-on-ones nowadays. dismantle various institutions like schools and corporations also used this field of psychology especially in dealing with their students and employees. Counselling psychology is responsible for conducting various tests and assessments in fix up to measure the intelligence, personality and other related factors concerning the behaviour of an individual. Nevertheless, ethical issues are often associated with these tests and assessments due to the sensitive cases that are involve in it. A safe example is the MMPI that is a kind of personality test. MMPI is a test that is designed to measure the pathological personality traits of an individual. It has been widely recognized and used as a personality assessment technique. The administration of this assessment takes about an hour and a half wherein the individual who would receive this test have to answer a crowing number of items that would reveal their personality (Butcher Hostetler, 1990). The validity and reliability of the MMPI has been debated. This is due to the fact that some argues that personality is very difficult to measure especially since it often deals with psychological construct. Moreover, ethical issues also become observable when this MMPI is non use for its intended purpose. The main objective of the MMPI is to give substantial result about the personality of an individual but some use it in terms of employment. The result of the MMPI becomes a basis for certain institutions or companies to discriminate individuals from a certain position (A pull back to Psychology and its Practice, n.d. ).This becomes unethical since the MMPI is not similar to employment tests and thus, it does not give reliable results on whether a person should be hired or not for a particular occupation. Furthermore, personality test like the MMPI often fails to recognize that the p ersonality of an individual has a lot to do with its cultural background. The MMPI should not be implemented universally since there should be discretion in using it depending on the type of culture that an individual has. This is essential in order to excite reliable results from this personality test. Lastly, ethical issues also exist in the administration and examination of the MMPI. This is due to the fact that psychologists who conduct these tests should not be subjective in interpreting its results. They should also observed confidentiality with regards to the result of such assessment as well as the necessary precaution in taking care of the consequential documents that concern the individuals whom they administered these tests.ReferencesA Guide to Psychology and its Practice. One of William Shakespeare most famous play is Romeo and Juliet which has being adapted many times over the years into innovative versions to give out in with the audiences taste. Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, my name is Heitor Hilberto and Im here(predicate) to talk about Romeo and Juliet. Baz Luhrmans 1996 adaptation of the classical love story of Romeo and Juliet had a great impact to its vast audience leaving most in tears. The adept and film codes were used very affectively in Baz Luhrmans adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, it does this by the reconstruction of the films location to the busy location of Verona, the action tv camera shots were well timed and positioned, the characters where develop to suit the setting of the b each by using agleam colours in their clothing. The movie connected with the audience because it was set in a modern city that the story took place in the big Verona, the movie followed the same timeline of events as the original play but was much easier to understand because it was set in the 90s which it launchs it easier for us to relate and understand the movie if its at least set in our century. They used very dramatic punk to upgrade the scenes which helped the camera crew get the best possible shots of the characters faces, costumes, movements and the locations also made the movie very exciting, creating great drama because they knew when to used soft and hard lighting to enhance the movie, some of the best scenes showing the camera shots would be the petrol station which used soft lighting but fast and concentrated camera shots to make the action intense and very fast passed. The party at the cablets house which used hard lighting to show the party was vibrant with very bri ght colours, exiting and vivid but the pool area scene lighting was very soft and used a romantic camera angles which just credited the lighting and concentrated to the characters face to show their emotions and their love for one another. The costumes where very stylish and made the film reach out to its audience both young and old, costumes and prop are very important to Romeo and Juliet, ( lurhmans 1996 version ) costumes arent only make the characters look good and stylish, it enables viewers to make rationale judgements about the characters, looks and how they might fit in society very quickly, the costumes in the party scene at the cablets house shows how the costumes can show the characters role in the movie, for example Juliet was dressed as an angel to show that she was sweet and pure, but Mercutio was dressed as the devil because he is an evil and dangerous man.William Shakespeare is one of the greatest poets and play writer in history. Definition Of Corporate Social Responsibility Commerce Essay
Definition Of merged Social Responsibility Commerce Essaythither is no single authoritative definition of CSR (ISO COPOLCO, 2002). Various definitions embracing a vast number of concepts tradition entirelyy frames as environmental concerns, earth relations, human resources concern and community relations were used to defined CSR. One of the most referred definition is by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development( WBCSD) ( 1999) that defines CSR as the continuing commitment by business to be defecate ethically and contribute to economic exploitation while improving the quality of life of the proceedingforce and their families as well as of the local anesthetic community and order at large Businesses not only throw off the economic responsibility of creation profitable and the legal responsibility to follow the laws or ground rules that guide their ability to achieve their economic requirements, but they also have ethical responsibilities that include a range of so cietal norms, or standards (Carroll, 2000).CSR has been around for more than two deca diethylstilbestrol. During the later half of twentieth century there arose the idea of the somatic fond ratify, which today underlies the CSR concept. Given the sometimes adverse do of business decision do on society as well as somatic reliance on society, the notion of an implied corporate social contract was conceived by social and economic theorists. This contract spells out societys expectations of business as well as (although much less(prenominal) discussed) businesss expectations of society (Bowie, 1983).CSR means being a legal steward of societys economic and human resources ( Journal of Consumer Marketing, 2001). In summary, CSR entails the obligation stemming from the implicit social contract between business and society for firms to be reactive to societys long- give-up the ghost needs and wants, optimizing the positive effects and minimizing the negative effects of its actions on society. To synchronize that cheekal social responsibility concerns atomic number 18 treated in the analogous routine manner in which legal, financial, and marketing concerns are addressed, four theories of corporate social responsibility have been advanced in the literature. The four positions are the holy, stakeholder, social demandingness, and social activist theories. The classical theory is the oldest of the four, and is grounded in classical economic theory. Firstly business executives are said to be primarily responsible to the shareholders of the slew and their primary goal is to promote efficiency and secure effective economic performance. Secondly managers are said to be responsible to respond to the shareholders demands. These views are a lot thought to coincide with each otherwise, because it is usually assumed that the main demand of shareholders is to maximize economic performance. In addition, twain versions agree that managers are to perform their corporate function according to the laws and, thus, to avoid such things as fraud and deception. Friedman (1970), points out Here the businessman self-selected or appointed directly or indirectly by stockholders is to be simultaneously legislator, executive, or jurist. He becomes in effect a public employee, a civil servant and p nerve impulse though he rest in name an employee of a private enterprise. This theory, albeit the oldest of the four theories, is still well and a go it has many supporters and proponents among academicians and practitioners. The second theory is the stakeholder theory which integrates the main idea of classical theory, that is, corporate executives are responsible to stockholders. Nevertheless, what differs it from classical theory is that other groups are directly affected by the conduct and decision of the firm. These groups can employees, consumers, creditors, suppliers, and legal sub-systems who have a stake in the organisation and who might affect, in one w ay or another, the corporate decision making process. Furthermore, corporate executives have a direct responsibility to promote the interests of these groups. The main disagreement among stakeholder theorists, however, over whether stakeholder interests of these groups take precedence over the financial interests of stockholders or the stakeholder interests are the overriding ones.Social demandingness theorists lay out that corporations have a responsibility to protect and promote certain interests of the general public. They agree with the stakeholder theorists that the interests of stakeholder groups are important, but they believe that these interests do not override non-stakeholders interests or demands for such things as safety, health, freedom, and prosperity. As with the stakeholder theory, this theory repudiates the notion that there is some balanced or sensible list of tangible responsibilities that corporate executives always have toward society. The list varies as the na ture and ranking of the interests or demands of the public change. The fourth and final theory is the social activist theory which is distinctively the most socially and morally demanding of the four theories. While agreeing with the stakeholders and social demandingness theories that executives have responsibilities toward stakeholders groups and the general public, social activists theorists argue that corporate managers should sometimes strive to undertake projects that advance the interests of the public scour when these undertakings are neither expected nor demanded by them. Social activists theorists contend that such projects should, for the most part, be in the area of corporate know-how, but they sometimes urge that executives deliberately take on social projects for which they have no special training or expertise2.1 Types of CSR and Corporate organisationThe notion that business has duties to society is firmly entrenched, although in the past several decades there has be en a revolution in the way people view the relationship between business and society. Carroll (1979) and other researchers believe that we should judge corporations not just on their economic success, but also on non-economic criteria. Carroll (1979) proposed a popular four-part definition of CSR, suggesting that corporations have four responsibilities or four faces (Carroll, 2000b, p. 187) to fulfill to be good corporate citizens economic, legal, ethical and philanthropicEconomic responsibility. Economic responsibility is to be profitable for principals, by delivering a good quality product, at a fair price, is due to customers.Legal responsibilities. Legal duties entail complying with the law and playing by the rules of the gameEthical responsibilities. Ethical duties catch the limitations of legal duties. They entail being moral, doing what is right, just, and fair respecting peoples moral rights and avoiding harm or social injury as well as preventing harm caused by others (Smi th and Quelch, 1993). eleemosynary responsibility. Interest in doing good for society, regardless of its impact on the bottom line is what is called altruistic, humanitarian or philanthropic CSR. Giving back time and property in the forms of voluntary service, voluntary association and voluntary giving is where most of the controversy over the legitimacy of CSR lies.CORPORATE GOUVERNANCE (CG)Moreover, CSR is closely linked with the Corporate Governance of the organization, be it hotel organization. Any of those types of CSR should start in the hotel organizations first and then move to external environment. The key people should be taken into consideration so the CSR practices should be geared towards the internal customers who will in turn become CSR delegates to micturate the external customers and environment. Companies must improve their business models by bringing CSR and sustainability into their strategy.Shleifer and Vishny (1997) define Corporate Governance as the ways in which suppliers of finance to organisations assure themselves of getting a impart on investment. Over the years, Corporate Governance has evolved from the traditional profit-centered model. By incorporating the community in which firms operate, the political environment, laws and regulations, and more generally the markets in which firms are relate.2.3 Vision of the Government Concerning CSRFor the past decades, CSR activities were practice by many organizations, but it was through with(p) on an unequal proportion. To this effect, The Minister of Finance, in his 2009 budget speech announced the legal creation of the CSR Fund. After amendments, the Income Tax Act (1995 Consolidated) stipulates, any company making a profit is required as per Section 50K and 50L to contribute 2% of its book profit. This helped to create a CSR Fund so as to finance the polar CSR activities in which the company is involved. The Government of Mauritius designed a framework with the objective of manda ting registered companies to pay 2% of their book profit towards CSR programs that contribute to the social and environmental development of the country.2.4 Legal framework of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)The legalization of CSR, has designed a new framework whereby, any company adopting a CSR activity, should first research for approval from the CSR Committee so as the program be accredited as an eligible one. Below, are the different changes brought in the legislation so as ease CSR practitioners.Key areas can be found in the Amended Income Tax Act (1995 Consolidated, Section 50K and 50L) which are as followsApproved non governmental organization (nongovernmental organization). The NGO should follow certain criteria. These criteria can be summarized as followsThe NGO should have a legal locus standThe NGO should be run on a non-profit basis. The cost involved in implementing the CSR program should not exceed 15% of the total cost.Proper records and books should be kept by the NGO and must summit certified audit reports.Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV). Any company whose CSR Fund exceeds Rs. 2 million can use a Special Vehicle to implement its CSR programs. The criteria for Special Purpose Vehicle and an approved NGO are the same(p).Corporate Partners. Sometime, companies call upon organizations which conduct CSR activities on behalf of the company. These organizations should follow the same criteria as above, to the exception that companies with a CSR budget less than Rs. 2 million, using a corporate partner should not spend more than 25% of the 2% CSR value budget in implementing the CSR programs. The CSR Committee has adopted two categories of CSR FundThe 2% of the book profit is equal to Rs.2 million or above, that is, CSR programs are conducted with a CSR Fund of equal Rs 2 million or above. The 2% of the book profit is less than the Rs. 2 million, that is, CSR programsare conducted with a CSR Fund of less than Rs 2 million. move into 1 and 2 below f ork outs how fund are being channeled so as to harmonize CSR practices.Figure 1(Modalities for a company with book profit less than Rs 100 million)Figure 2(Modalities for a company with book profit above Rs 100 million)As seen above, figure 1 and 2 shows clearly, if any amount of sassy fund from the CSR Fund should be remitted to the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA). All companies, remitting their return at the end of a tax year should submit a return on the different CSR activities undertaken by the company during the tax year.2.5 CSR FundThis refers to the amount collected for implementing CSR activities. As seen above, in Figure 1and 2, programs can be either corporate or national. Corporate CSR programs are those activities internal to a company. The usual beneficiaries are the company employees. It may vary from size of the company to the number of employee within. Corporate programs are financed by the of the 2% book profit. National program are those programs, which are per ceived as national inequalities. This amount is deposited in the National CSR Fund which will be used to combat the above mention inequalities. The National CSR Fund is rough of Rs 2 billion( CSO,2010).2.6 The Hospitality Industry -DefinitionsDefinitions of the hospitality have been approached from a number of different perspectives. Most of them combine physiological and psychological elements with security and levels of service.Hospitality is implicated with the pro view of physiological and psychological comfort with defined levels of service. The satisfactions may be physiological (thirst, bed, warmth), economic (value for money), social (company, service) and psychol ogical (self-esteem, status, security). C. Cooper, R. shepherd, J.Westlake (1994)Even if the approach to defining hospitality may shift according to the authors, there are a number of integral elements that are common to all. These areHospitality is a complex combine of tangible and intangible features and benefitsHospitality involves a satisfying interaction between the service provider and the customerHospitality provides guests with security, psychological and physiological comfort by offering food, beverage and accommodation. Therefore, bearing in mind the above characteristics, a simpler definition of the hospitality industry may beThe Hospitality Industry is involved with providing accommodations, food, beverage, entertainment, comfort and recreation for breakers away from their usual residences and normal surroundings. The industry also naturally facial expression forward to meet the customers needs for safety and support of their persons, property, modes of transportation, and even the varying purpose of their travel.Speaking generally, those who make use of hospitality services demand attainment of a professional level of quality consistent with populace standards, although perhaps adjusted for local conditions. They anticipate the facilities will be clean, comfortable, safe and secure. They expect good food and beverage at a reasonable rate. Furthermore, they look for courtesy, friendliness, respect and identification from the host.Perhaps more importantly they demand honesty, truth and equity in their dealings with the operator and his employees.2.7 Hospitality Industry In Mauritius diachronic BACKGROUNDIn Mauritius, the first hotel was the Park Hotel in 1952 so as to accommodate the crew members coming at that time. Then came the Mauritius Hotel, the first beach hotel, reinforced in 1954 at Le Morne followed by Le Chaland, another beach hotel in 1961.But the real development of touristry took place soon later Mauritius got its independence fro m the British. In early 1970s the creation of Trou aux Biches Hotel by the Mauritius Hotels, the setting up of the Club Meditrane and the Saint Gran Hotel by the Southern sunbathe Hotels as well as the Merville Beach Hotel by the ex-British Colons who wanted to come back here during the winter months of England. The Mauritius Hotel is now the Beachcomber group and the Southern sunniness Hotels is the Sun International Resorts Limited. At present there are 105 hotels in Mauritius (operational) and there are not less than 5 more under locution as per the registered list set by the Ministry of Tourism. The numbers of hotels, rooms and bed places have increased constantly from 1991. Moreover the Prime Minister has announced his vision to reach 2 million tourists in 2015. Consequently an average annual growth of 10% in tourist arrival is expected. In order to reach this target, an approximate number of 18500 rooms should be made available. This will bring about the creation of around 37000 direct jobs and double the amount in footing of indirect jobs. Due to the rapid growth of tourism and hospitality industry, government has introduced incentives for the private sector to bring in a sustainable development, namely by corporate governance and corporate social responsibility. This is achievable through proper public-private sector partnership.Overview of the Hotel industry IN MAURITIUSThe hospitality industry in Mauritius has developed speedily during the past 25 years. The coastal regions as well as the interior part of the island are constantly changing with the construction of the hotels and the increasing number of vehicles being used for the tourism industry. In 2007, the tourism industry was considered the third pillar of the economy after Sugar and Textile, and currently it plays a vital role in the economic growth of the country. The undoubted fall of 35% in the price of sugar and the removal of preference agreement with the EU market, has earmarked the tourism industry as the main industry capable of boosting the Mauritian economy. In April 2010, according to the last bulletin published by the Central Statistical Office (CSO), Mauritius welcomed 249,971 tourists as compared to 232,908 in identical quarter in 2009, registering a 7.3% growth. Net receipt of Rs 11,021 million, that is, a growth of 7.4% compared to Rs 10,265 million for the same period last year. Figure 3 below show the arrival of tourist compared to the same period last year.Figure 3 table of arrival of tourist till the end of MarchSource CSO information dated April 2010But after two decades of impressive growth, the need for responsible corporate governance has been felt in the country as the attitudes mentality and familiarity of those working in that industry have not evolved at the same pace in basis of social responsibility and environmental awareness. Impacts of this rapid and someway unplanned development are being experienced in the environment at large. Still, a lot has to be done to meet the competitive advance through proper campaign and involvement of all stakeholders so as to contribute towards sustainable development of the hospitality sector. In order to support its dogging growth, the Mauritian Tourism and Hospitality industry needs well-trained staff with full knowledge of their product while respecting the socio-economic and cultural environment in which the Mauritian tourism product is evolving. It is really important to maintain a high standard of efficiency and service so as to meet the requirements of an increasingly competitive and forward-looking global market.2.8 CSR in the hotel industry In MauritiusWithin the hospitality industry it has been agreed that there are increasing environmental and societal concerns. The big point is how to manage our environmental impact as demand grows against a backdrop of increasing vulnerability. As a result of demand for more sustainable destinations and travel preferences, mana gement policies are being felt.Hotels practicing CSR look at the following areasWorkplace (where employees are treated equally and fairly)Marketplace (stakeholders)Environment (which has to be sustained for the time to come generation)CommunityEthicsHuman rightsMany hotels are now aware of CSR practices and have begun to use environmental-friendly products. Hotels in Mauritius are reducing the use of hazardous or non-degradable chemicals. Big hotel chains like Oberoi Mauritius recycle oil, water system and plastic bottles while all hotels with more than 50 rooms are compel to recycle water as per the legislation. Hotels tend to purchase products that have a reduced environmental impact during their life cycle, from suppliers that demonstrate environmental and social responsibility to their customers and the society. Furthermore, Association des Hoteliers et Restaurateurs de LIle Maurice (AHRIM), is fully supporting the CSR initiatives initiated by the Mauritian Government. Through i ts members, they are actively putting forward the CSR activities on a regional basis all over the island.Stakeholders (employees, customers, shareholders, suppliers, business partners, government) are getting more and more involved the hotels CSR activities. Hotel employees are educated to make a conscious decision in party favor of environment and social issues in their private and business lives. Hotel guests are informed about CSR activities and are asked to participate in responsible business activities within the hotels and to work together to find innovative solutions that satisfy the hotels economic, environmental and social objectives.Managers are asked to abide by local and EU legislation especially on boil laws, health and safety, human rights and the environment. A great deal can be done when developing a hotel property in order to make both the development process and the eventual operation more environmentally sustainable. One of the aims of CSR is to make the communit y benefit from the hotel industry.2.9 Benefits of CSR in the hotel industryHotels who adopt CSR into their operations and public image depend on the following factorsSizeLevel of diversificationResearch and DevelopmentAdvertisingGovernment InterventionConsumer IncomeLabour market conditions defend of the industry life cycleHowever this differs for different hotel organization, for example, larger hotels like international hotel chains may operate a CSR program at a lower cost than a small hotel because of economies of scale. It is a method for organization to distinguish themselves from their competitorsFirstly, hotels benefit from CSR as it helps to reduce operating cost such as implementing of recycling and energy saving programs.
